6 mark questions are a surprisingly good test of scientific clarity and precision of language. They are easy to gain full marks in if you understand your stuff and you don’t witter on about the irrelevant (even if it is really interesting).

Top tips

  • Use the question to structure your answer. Bullet points are useful paragraph starters which stop you wandering off topic.
  • Use the correct scientific language and avoid sensationalist or floral words
  • Don’t introduce your answer. That’s basically wasting ink.
  • Time left over? Add extra details at the end.
