Lichens can be environmental indicators for air pollution. Lichens cannot grow in a place where air pollution is high with sulfur dioxide however any type of lichen (hairy, shrubby and leafy) can grow in any place where the air is not polluted. Crusty and Leafy lichens can still grow in a place where sulfur dioxide in the air is low. So lichens reveal what places are polluted with sulfur dioxide and what places are clean.
Why not stick this on you student journal too. It’s much easier for me to keep up with you there now I follow your blog.
Love the start you’ve made to our lichens project. When you add it to your Student Journal, take it a step further and explain what Lichens are and how their colour is useful to environmental scientists too. This involves different varieties of Lichen.

lichens are great environmental indicators because lichens are a type of plant which grow in places like tree bark or rocks. so it would mean that they will need to be really good to absorb water and nutrition to survive and grow there. in certain types of areas lichens cannot grow because of the air pollution in that area. lichens are harmed by air pollution because it would dissolve in the rainwater so for example sulfur dioxide.
