Vaccines have caused major drops in disease rates in the UK and Worldwide. We discussed the story of Edward Jenner and his experiments. James Phipps, the boy who was treated by Jenner went on to open museums in his name. Including the Science Museum.

Early medicines were concerned with treating infectious disease but one of the major factors leading to a reduction in infections was sanitation and hygiene. Semmelweiss had a massive impact on the was hospitals control infection.

Week 5

As medicines and sanitation ahve improves pathogens must go to new lengths to survive. This has led to large outbraks of diseases related to “superbugs” such as MRSA. This week covers how his came about and what methods we could use to prevent it.
